Volkl’s 90Eight has been around a few years now and is their biggest seller in this freeride range. About 500grm lighter per pair than the Mantra M5 in their All Mountain range, these are a classic, dual purpose, Freeride/Tourer.
It is true that in their VTA range there are some excellent, even lighter, touring skis but the “eights” will work as a touring ski both for the more casual tourer, or someone looking for a powerful ski for some high speed backcountry descents.
They have great float and a very solid edge grip so ski superbly in classic all mountain terrain, particularly where the skier has a tendency to spend more time off-piste than on.
The 90EIGHT is the most versatile ski in the most versatile range. With its 3D.Ridge construction and added 3D.Glass, designed to reduce the ski’s weight while increasing stability and smoothness, the 90EIGHT is an all-mountain ski that handles anything from bumps, to trees, to groomers, and even powder and crud. The moderate taper sidecut and precision-matched flex allow you to steer it anywhere you want to go to rip up the mountain with an easy, cruisy feel. And on a sidenote: This tip & tail rocker ski originally wasn’t built for on-piste usage, but it is always a pleasure to see how good it works there too.
