    Good Morning Jeff

Thanks for your enquiry and sounds like an amazing opportunity.  When you get to talk about -40C then that is seriously cold and well beyond the -27C air temperature which is the coldest I've experienced on a couple of occasions in the Alps, however whether it's -27 C or -40 C the priciples for protection are the same.

No "one good layer" is going to do the job, even if it were Sealskin, for us humans, so the principle of numerous thin layers to trap air between each (that can then be heated by your own body warmth) has remained the way to go since the Everest climbing days of Mallory and Irvine in the early part of the last century.

The waterproof, windproof and yet breathable membranes in todays clothing like Goretex, Dermizax etc are essential to provide that outer climate barrier and these are then supplemented by wearing a series of thin undergarments to provide the effective insulation; these are used in variuos combinations to find the balance of warmth that is required for any given temperature.

So, good quality outerwear, in your case to protect from freezing cold seaspray, driving rain, sleet, hail or snow is what is required, with this being supported by top quality thermal base layers like those from Columbia which are very high tech and very efective (all the shop staff have some of these), together with the more natural Merino wool based garments from companies like Ortovox and Odlo (again shop staff favourites) is the way to go.  You will probably have some lightweight woollen products or lightweight fleece garments already so these can be used to supplement anything you buy especially for this trip.

The Ice Glory is a good quality pant and would I'm sure do a good job for you and your need for thermal under garments has come at a good time since this week (up until June 5th) we have a 50% off sale on these both instore and online.

I hope this helps, but please do not hesitate to call us on 01603 716655 after the shop re-opens at 10am on Tuesday and we can help talk you through any other queries you may have.

    Kind regards
