Jackets

You want to be equally comfortable at -25C out on the slopes and at plus 20C inside the restaurant at the top of the mountain. Waterproof and breathable outerwear is thus essential if you are going to be able to balance those extremes and stay comfortable wherever you are.

Never, ever, buy outerwear that is not breathable no matter how waterproof it is; you might as well ski or snowboard in a heavy duty plastic sack!

Your outerwear needs to have a good level of waterproofing, say a minimum of 3500mm and ideally 5000mm upwards (this mm rating is determined by the height a column of water has to be before it forces its way through the outer fabric). Perhaps more importantly, where you are involved in energetic sports like skiing and snowboarding, is the breathability of the garment.

We suggest a minimum of 5000grms/sq.m/24hrs and ideally 8000 plus. This is effectively the amount of “steam” that can escape through a square metre of the fabric every 24 hours.
